Nottingham Doubles Tourney Highlights

A bit late to the party, but I promised some colleagues i'd post something about the awesomeness of the Doubles Tourney at Warhammer World last month. 750 points per teammate, 6 games, 2 days at the home of Warhammer itself. What a blast!

Last minute issues meant my original matchup of Double Dark Eldar wasn't to be, I ended up going with Eldar while my teammate caste his Tau in the role of Iggy's partner - see what I did there? :p

Opting for fun and insanity over anything else, I included a 459 point Seer Council in my 750 point list, forcing the opponent to deal with it while a whole host of Battlesuits, Broadsides and Firewarriors blasted holes into the enemy. Good times :)

Highlights included 9 Sanctioned Psykers led by a Primaris Psyker all having their heads explode inside their transport thanks to some Runes of Warding.
Belial passing 40 armor saves - yes 40 in a single turn.
Our armies ending up as the sacrificial lambs to a double Orc list that landed a devastating turn 2 charge, when a host of Stormboyz land right into our lines, and an exploded result on a trukk causes it to hurtle towards our deployment zone, giving a large Nob unit the distance they needed to charge next turn.

And now, some pretty pics of the event, enjoy!

Guardian Jetbikes: Three is a crowd?

So recently 3++ featured a small article on the merits of Guardian Jetbikes as scoring units (post here).
One of the important points made by Kirby is that Jetbikes 'really need to supplement an Eldar's scoring rather than be a focal point'.

Well said Kirby, this has my vote for sure. That said, can they really be viable in units of three? Am I missing something here fellow Eldar players? For 66 points, you'll have a fast moving unit with the same basic stats as a marine. Think about that for a moment. Take one casualty, and you test at an unimpressive ld 8, falling back at 3d6. Fail that test at two casualties, and you can never regroup...

For me, good list building has always been based around capitalising your strengths and compensating for your weaknesses. For example, i've made sure everything in my entire army is mobile and survivable - even my Vypers yes! - despite being quite a minimal force. Given that there's a small number of units on the board, i've compensated by making them damn hard to kill. It's by no means a purely rock list either, and packs an impressive amount of firepower.Which brings me back to this idea of taking '3x Guardian Jetbikes'...

In objective games, the most you can hope for is to keep them in reserve for as long as possible, hiding them from view when they enter play, then racing for an objective on turn 5. Easier said than done. A smart general will see the opportunity to easily neutralise a scoring unit. KP missions, even worse. Again, all you can do is hide, but this time the unit acts completely as a negative. All it can do is deny KPs, which frankly for me is a bit useless.

'3x' should be banned!

Thoughts? Comments?

Warpcon XXI

It's that time of year again, Warpcon hijacks the otherwise chilled out city of Cork, Ireland. Time for my Eldar to leave the comfort of the gaming club and hit the tables of the Tourney circuit in UCC...

Tournaments offer greater diversity to the gaming environment than what would normally be offered by LGS / clubs, that's for sure. It's a time to meet new people, have some fun and a great opportunity to learn new tactics and ideas away from your club's environment. Of course, after the games, I'll be chilling in the 'Old Bar' of University College Cork where I used to work; who knows, maybe i'll even bump into TKE and Stormy who are also attending. Game on!

Return of the Mack!

Good news everyone! Iggy's back!

Okay, it's about time - I've been very busy lately for sure, but in the meantime, I've purchased some of those Dark Eldar everyone's been talking about.

My verdict? The codex absolutely rocks. It's very hard to make a bad list, or rather, it takes more effort to make a bad list than a good one, that's for sure. Battlerep coming soon...

Dark Eldar Harlequins - Themed Army Considerations

It's no surprise to anyone (or at least I hope not) that Harlequins are featured in the upcoming Dark Eldar codex, available as an Elites choice. Identical in all respects to the stats in the Eldar Codex, they're dancing to a familiar tune.

Iggy has been busy painting 30 Harlequins (I am having nightmares with checkered designs for sure) in an attempt to put together a Dark Eldar Harlequin themed army, ready to rock as soon as the Dark Eldar Codex hits the shelves in November. Already you might get an idea of the kinds of strengths and weaknesses that we'll see with this kind of list, which should be obvious if you've taken a look at the leaked rules that are permeating the web.

Weaknesses Iggy? How utterly pessimistic of you. The sky is falling in? Not quite so grim, but if you want to make a Harlequin themed Dark Eldar army like me, you'd better be prepared for some hard truths...

Autarch Master Strategist - Rules Question

Here's something to think about on one of those rainy days...

The Autarch Master Strategist Rule allows you to add +1 to your reserves roll. It's a nifty vice that enables us to shift the game to our own ends. Lets us stay in the game longer by playing less. A whole turn less to be more specific.

On to the FAQ, look here and scroll down a little bit. Look right, down just a little further.. There you are!

"The player may choose each turn whether to add +1 [...] or no bonus to his reserve rolls."
